As you may have heard, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Having a filling breakfast not only gives your body energy, it also promotes a healthy metabolism and prevents you from overeating later in the day. Still, if you tend to skip your morning meal for a little more snooze time, we get it – the struggle is real. But if you think about it, giving up just 10 minutes of sleeping-in for a refreshing and wholesome start to the day is absolutely worth it! Here are a couple of simple yet super tasty breakfasts you can make on your own, plus other scrumptious choices you can pick up at our malls.

DIY Breakfasts

1. Chia seed toast

Wake up to a nutritious boost every morning.

What could be better than a peanut-butter-and-banana combo? A peanut-butter-and-banana combo with a sprinkling of superfood, of course! After you’re done spreading peanut butter and laying out banana slices over your toast, simply scatter half a tablespoon of chia seeds on top. Chia seeds contain omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, calcium and plenty more nutrients that’ll keep your energy up, promote digestive health, and give you glowing skin. They also taste great on toast, giving it that subtle, nutty crunch. For a tangy twist, top off your toast with slices of fresh strawberries.

2. Yogurt parfait

This takes just a few minutes of prep-time!

Here’s a fancy-sounding meal that is perfectly easy to make, yet will surely impress everyone. Say “par-fey” gracefully when your colleagues ask what’s for breakfast as you tuck into this concoction full of tasty goodness. For a single serving, you’ll need:

  • 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt
  • ½ cup of sliced raspberries or strawberries
  • ½ pint of fresh blueberries
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 1/4 cup of nuts (walnuts, almonds or macadamia)

Start off by layering your mason jar with ¼ cup of Greek yogurt, and drizzle some honey in the yogurt. Top it off with a layer of nuts, then add another layer of fruits. Repeat layering process till the jar is full. Don’t forget to shop for a mason jar of a suitable size before you get started!

Check out mason jars from Daiso at Eastpoint Mall, Waterway Point and Changi City Point

3. Savoury oatmeal

Who says breakfast is boring?

Craving for something warm and savoury on a rainy morning? Whip up a hearty oatmeal dish with savoury ingredients. If you’re looking for a hassle-free option, simply mix flavour cooked oats with garlic and add a fried egg, along with chopped bell peppers and spring onions.

Savoury Garlic Oats

For one serving:

  • ½ cup of instant oats
  • 1 small clove of garlic, chopped
  • 1 fried egg
  • 1 bell pepper
  • Chopped spring onions for garnish

Sauté chopped garlic with a teaspoon of oil in a pot, then stir instant oats in. Add water, salt and pepper, then bring this to a boil.  Simmer for a few minutes until the mixture has a porridge-like consistency. Finally, top off your oatmeal with ingredients of your choice.

Mexican Garlic Oats

For one serving:

  • ½ cup of instant oats
  • 1 small clove of garlic, chopped
  • ½ tablespoon of taco seasoning and paprika powder
  • ½ lime
  • ½ cup of fresh corn kernels
  • ½ tablespoon of salsa sauce
  • ¼ cup of grated cheddar
  • 1 avocado
  • Jalapeño slices for garnish

If you have more time over the weekends, change up your oatmeal recipe with a flavorful Mexican twist. Or better still, get up earlier to prepare this meal for your other half and earn some well-deserved brownie points.

Similar to the earlier recipe, heat oil in a pot with chopped garlic. Then add oats in, together with taco seasoning, paprika powder, lime juice, salt and water. Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for a few minutes till it has reached a consistency that you’re satisfied with. Top it off with corn, salsa sauce, grated cheddar, avocado and jalapeño slices.

4. Tortilla Wrap

The freshest ingredients all in one wrap!

Try making a home-made wrap if you want something savoury that isn’t too heavy. Here’s what you’ll need for one serving:

  • 1 avocado
  • 2 tortillas
  • 2 lettuce leaves
  • 1 medium tomato, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • Meat (optional): Grilled chicken breast marinated in Fajita seasoning, or any type of ham
  • ½ Lime (optional)
  • ¼ cup of basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Mash a quarter of the avocado with a fork and spread it over the tortillas. In the centre of each tortilla, layer with lettuce, tomato slices and remaining avocado. If you’re up for something more filling, add chunks of grilled chicken breast, or a slice of ham. Sprinkle with cheese, salt, pepper and a dash of lime juice – and you’re almost done! For more flavour, you could also add basil leaves and cilantro.

With all your desired ingredients laid out, fold over the bottom and top edges of the tortilla. Then, rotate the tortilla and roll it up from the bottom. Once the filling is tucked in nicely, cut the tortilla into half. If you’re packing it to-go, insert toothpicks through the top of each wrap to keep the filling in place.

Tip: If the tortillas have been kept in the refrigerator, heat them up in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds before you start piling on the ingredients.

5. Tomato and Basil Omelette

An omelette is easy to make and a great source of nutrition.

Eggs are some of the best sources of protein and are rich in Vitamin D which helps to protect bones. They also make a wholesome breakfast food as their high protein content helps you feel fuller for longer. Plus, a good ol’ omelette is a comfort food will never fail to perk you up! Fry it with tomatoes and basil leaves for a fragrant touch. Here’s what you need for one portion:

  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup of grated Cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 2 or 3 sprigs of fresh basil
  • half cup of cherry tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil

Crack the eggs into a bowl and whip them until the eggs turn slightly frothy. Chop the cherry tomatoes into half and add to a hot frying pan. Drizzle olive oil onto the pan with a pinch of salt and pepper. Fry and toss around for 1 minute, then turn the heat down to medium and sprinkle the basil leaves. Pour the eggs in and move the pan around to spread them out evenly. Before the eggs are fully cooked, add grated cheese in so it would melt inside the omelette. With a spatula, flip the eggs so that they don’t get burnt on each side.
