Step 1. Tree Fluff Up

Remember it’s important to always fluff up your Christmas tree correctly to avoid problems.  Always fluff from the back of the branch, so you can direct them the way you want. Fluff upwards and outwards and make sure you adjust the different sections to blend well.

Step 2. Coiling of Christmas Lights

When coiling the lights it’s important to start at the base of the tree with the male plug and work your way upwards, coiling at intervals around the branches. Continue this with the female end of the plug, making sure the lights fit snugly on the tree.

Secure the wires with cable ties or floral wire, if required, to keep the wires firmly in place.

Finally, always use LED lights as they use less power are sturdier and generate less heat.

Step 3. Styling of Ribbons

Be creative and experiment whenever you can – use two or even three kinds of ribbons, depending on the theme and coil them together. You can always look online for ideas and Pinterest is a good place to start, magazines are great too.

You can use staples or floral wire to secure the ribbons to the tree if needed. Wider ribbons are much easier to see from a distance but can be tricky to work with, so it might be best to start with a medium width and add smaller or larger ribbons as you go along.

Ribbons with wire in the edges or mesh wires are easiest to style because they can support loops and other shapes you create and you can mix them with softer ribbons to get a different look.

Step 4. Ornament Decoration

Some prefer to work with ribbons first and ornaments later so steps 3 and 4 can be easily interchangeable depending on what feels best for you.

Make sure you have a good variety of ornament sizes – in most cases the large ornaments are at the bottom to give the tree better balance. When you place the ornaments chose the main ‘theme’ ones first and display them in a ‘diamond’ formation. From there you can add more so they are evenly spaced out.

Decorating with ornaments can be very creative and the more you play with placement the more variety of affects you can get.

Step 5. Tree Topper

Contemporary styling now makes use of wreaths – big or small – as an ideal topper for your tree, depending on theme. Berries and picks/sprays are also used to create a more festive and radiating effect at the top of the tree.

Other popular alternatives are bouquets of ribbons as well as smaller ornaments. Make sure to secure all tree toppers firmly by using cable ties or floral wire.
